Pennsylvania's Electric Deregulation Seen As Success Story

Shaped by conflict and controversy, Pennsylvania's electric utility deregulation program has become a model for being able to entice residential consumers to switch power providers. Texas and New Jersey, which both passed deregulation laws this year, borrowed liberally from Pennsylvania's program.
Energy experts also say that of the four states that had electric utility deregulation up and running at the beginning of the year -- Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and California -- Pennsylvania has done the best job of luring outside power companies to compete with existing utilities in the state.

PA Companies Tap into Electricity Deregulation

Although the nation is enjoying lower gasoline prices at the moment, the chair of the state House Environmental Resources and Energy Committee is warning that Pennsylvania electricity prices are poised to go way up--even double--in the next two years, thanks to a 1996 price deregulation law that is about to affect the entire state.
But amid dire predictions of rate increases, two up-and-coming Pennsylvania companies are prepared to help businesses and consumers save big bucks on their utilities when deregulation comes--and poised to prosper in the process.
